Oh snap, Noel pulls out an MG-42 out of no where D:
What an absolutely fantabulous series this is turning out to be… subtle, intellectual, nuanced, beautiful to look at and to hear. A real gem in a season of new shows that are mostly tedious, exploitative clunkers. This, Durarara, and Katanagatari are the best new offerings of the winter season, 2010.
One has to pay very close attention to everything that happens in Sora no Woto, because so much is meant to distract and mislead. In other words, this is a show that hides deadly serious intent behind a facade of bubbly kawaii. The chripy, happy string ensemble and piano heavy music is particularly misleading. Yet there is a very dark side to this seemingly sweet show. The sinister here lurks just below the surface: Amazing Grace, for instance, which has appeared several times already and will probably appear again, is most often heard today as part of a funeral. The girls innocently only perceive it as a beautiful melody. Further, the owl appears at crucial, siginificant points in all the episodes, and does some very strange things. It’s intentional. The owl, generically speaking, is in cultures worldwide a harbinger of the spirit realm; it can not only be a symbol of wisdom or of deep knowledge, but of unpleasantness, impending disaster, or particularly gruesome death. The girls, after all, are meant to evoke the ancient fire maidens… who, it is clear, were sacrificial victims. Little hints at the macabre are dropped all over. What happened to the girls’ briefly mentioned predecessors (note my use of that particular word) at the fort? We don’t know, just like they themselves don’t know so much about their past culture. One can, however, reasonably suspect something distinctly nasty happened to them. Yet the constant undercurrent of menace is offset, thus far, by the principle characters’ appealing innocence. We’ll see how long THAT holds, eh? SnoW ROX
You are so good barzuk! You know I was hoping that nothing bad would happen to anyone of these girls, but as I sit here watching and I can feel the clouds starting to gather and darken. The calm before the storm, maybe? Anyway, I would think that if anyone, Kanata specifically, thought she had to die for the sake of others she would gladly sacrifice herself. Amazing Grace is generally sung at funerals. My dad is a pastor and has preformed many of them, but while the song brings tears because we know someone we loved has died, it also brings a sense of hope. Likewise, the sacrifice of the fire maidens while heartbreakingly sad, brought hope to the people of this village. I don’t know maybe I’m wrong once again, but while I listened to this song I was struck with a feeling of such sadness, but at the same time I felt like it was saying, “It’s okay, there has to be an ending in order for there to be rebirth.” I’m probably nuts, but there you have it.
Thanks so much admin. for posting this awesome anime!!
