it still strikes me as slightly odd that they can make walking tanks, phones etc, but no radios……

Poor, haunted Captain Felicia. This episode is not as nihilistic as it at first may appear; although death, even the Great Death, Extinction and Oblivion, may be at all times just under the surface in this show, for the characters meaning, context and purpose are provided by the strength of each one’s own feelings of love and of protectiveness. For many Japanese, after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world felt like it had indeed come to an end. Those events, along with the massive firebombings of Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and other urban centers provided the pivotal catastrophes prompting a seachange in Japanese culture. This is one of the more articulate anti-war anime I’ve seen, reinforcing the “children’s crusade” element I’ve mentioned before… children sent to kill, and to be killed. And it’s very much going on today. Sora no Woto is both elegant, and appalling. There are no victors in war… only victims.
What a GREAT show.
The thing is radio requires radio towers…which i guess is a bit out of their reach in terms of technological development/construction…i mean they’ve basically reverted back to World War I era, where radio is only starting to be developed, although they certainly know about the technology of radio, i don’t think they have anyone who still has the know how to re-create/build it and maintain it…remember they only have one phone line available in that city/town, and it’s only for emergencies…On another note, who were they fighting in the GREAT War? Aliens? I’m not sure but did i see a laser beam, they must’ve been pretty advanced, considering the fact that they still can operate tanks with computer systems…i suppose they’re so advanced that they know how to use but not maintain and re-create older technology, i mean if you ask me how a telegraph works when we all use a computer nowadays…i’d be stumped…
lastly, they know a great war happened, they know the effects, and they now live in a post apocalyptic era, yet they still actively maintain an army to guard against the enemy, i guess they’re slow to learn about the negatives of war…does it mean it’s in human nature to fight each other? I wonder what they were fighting about, then again does it really matter? its always about resources…
Young Filicia finds an FN FAL, that’s perhaps one of our current gen/last gen rifles. This is in the future then….where probably nuclear war turned us back in time in terms of technology. This is getting great!
The FN FAL was that rifle next to the dead soldier she finds by the way.
Nevermind, it looks like a mix of different rifles :O. G3A3 parts and FAL parts, but I’ve seen it before… can’t put my finger on it but it’s one of the rifles of our generation

the war stuff was awesome!!
on a note of technological decline, the “older era” walking tanks moved like spiders, climbing walls fast and agile. Then the 4 legged ones were awkward and slow. and had no radios!
The atmosphere is probably so ionized from the nukes that you can’t use radios

dudes out there who compare this show to k-on and stop watching this, will suffer the consequences. cause this was AWESOME. let me tell you AWESOME. this episode sums up all the reasons why i watch anime.

yea.. it amazes me how they wouldn’t have a radio when they has so high-tech weapons..
but regardless, this was by far the best episode.
The tanks in the battle scenes are clearly low-tech, post-apocalyptic versions of the spider-like ones. There was a war against… aliens? That’s what the dead soldier’s words seem to imply. But it also seems that the dead man was wrong about the world coming to an end: even if the seas are dead, in Seize things look pretty pleasant, don’t they?
Another awesome episode dudes!! I’m crying again. Wow, this was a really emotional episode and I can’t believe just how great this anime has been from episode one. By the way, Rio, Felicia and Kanata all met the princess? She was the one that was playing Amazing Grace, huh?
What part does the princess play in all their lives, I wonder? She was obviously very involved in the war effort herself, if three out of the five main characters came across her. I’m so looking forward for more from this awesome anime.

wow this show is nothing like i thought it would be. i was thinking it will be a sort of K-ON! type show (that was good to) but damn this is awesome
